The next chapter for Niantic's Pokémon Go involves borrowing another popular element from the game series's main installments: battling. The new trainer battles feature has been a long time coming. The battles will involve similar mechanics to raid battles, in which a series of taps initiates your basic attack and fills up your charge attack meter. It should also be noted that these are not turn-based battles like what most Pokémon fans might expect, but real-time ones. The few exceptions there are for brief pauses in the fight for charge attack animations and defensive shield items for blocking those charge attacks.

as declared in Not only can they fight each other one-on-one, but trainer battles introduce competitive trainer leagues as well, so that Pokémon masters can truly be named. Trainer battles are one-on-one fights, either pitting a player against another, local trainer, or letting two friends compete online. Pokémon battles otherwise work much the same way as they do for Raid Battles and Gyms. But in trainer battles, Pokémon have two different charge attacks to choose from (although that second charge attack must be unlocked). Trainer leagues are the three tiers which players must select in order to participate in trainer battles.
